I’m a journalist by trade and spend a lot of time writing for my own enjoyment outside of work. Because it’s such an integral part of my life, I care deeply about the tools I use and am always looking for products that make my writing more fun, more functional, and more productive. That is exactly what the Pomera DM250US offers.

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already considered some of the other solutions on the market. I know I did. The limited editing capabilities and even more limited feature set always killed it for me. While the Pomera DM250US uses an LCD screen and not e-ink, it’s crisp and responsive, and even offers inverted contrast (white on black) for typing at night. On top of that, it has a wide array of features – all centering on writing – that make it a full-on word processor instead of being limited to first drafts.

Some of my favorites are its expandable storage, multiple ways to save, back-up, and retrieve files, font choice and text size, remappable function keys to match your workflow. The keyboard is a little compact but is still easy to use.

This is a purpose-built machine for a very targeted audience. Since it’s a word processor and only a word processor, it has an exceptional focus on delivering on that experience. If I could ask for anything, it would be a scissor or mechanical keyboard (or the ability to connect a Bluetooth keyboard) and a front-lit e-ink screen. A future version maybe? Either way, this is a great little device that inspires me to write where I usually wouldn’t. I love it and recommend it to anyone that thinks a distraction-free writing device might be the right choice for them.

I was expecting a quirky palmtop, but the Pomera DM250 turned out to be a legit, well-built writing machine. It feels distinctly Japanese: solid, sleek, and more than worth the price. It’s also bigger than I expected, which is a good thing — the keyboard is comfortable and easy to type on.

If you’ve ever used terminal editors like Nano or Pico, or if you remember WordPerfect/WordStar, the menu system will feel familiar and intuitive. Unlike many dedicated writing decks or journaling devices, the DM250 lets you tweak a lot: you can make the font size huge or tiny, switch between serif and sans-serif, and toggle between light and dark modes.

The keyboard isn’t mechanical or clicky — it’s more like a modern laptop, but pleasant and responsive. It boots instantly, though the glossy screen benefits from a non-glare protector (I picked one up right away). Battery life is excellent. I also grabbed a leather case off eBay that makes it even more portable — I now carry it everywhere.

For scale: a Traveler’s Notebook (Standard) is 4.3" × 8.25", while the DM250 measures 10.4" × 4.7".

So far, I’m really enjoying it. The DM250 is bigger, sturdier, and more customizable than I imagined. It feels like a true writer’s tool — simple, focused, and built to last.

I’ve been using the pomera DM250US for a while now, and honestly, it’s unlike any other writing device I’ve tried. The biggest thing I’ve noticed is how it helps me actually focus on writing. There are no apps, no notifications, no temptation to check the internet — just me and my words. It feels refreshing compared to working on a laptop where distractions are always a click away.

The device itself is very simple, which I love. It doesn’t try to do a hundred things at once. Instead, it just does one thing really well: it lets me write. The keyboard feels solid and comfortable, and it boots up instantly, so I never lose momentum when I want to get words down quickly.

That said, it is compact. The screen and keyboard are a bit smaller than what I’m used to, so if you’re writing for hours at a time, it might feel a little tight. But for me, the trade-off is worth it — the portability means I can carry it anywhere and start writing whenever I want, whether I’m at a café, on a plane, or just sitting outside.

In short, the pomera DM250US has become my go-to tool for distraction-free writing. It’s not flashy, but that’s exactly why it works so well.

I really like this device. When I first got it, I didn't expect to use it to its full capabilities. I thought it would be another device for me to zero-draft on, but I have been drafting short stories and editing them, and it's safe to say I'm obsessed.

I also love that it's such a discreet device without obvious branding, but it's still a conversation piece. I wish I could speak on the battery, but I haven't done my ultimate test yet, which is ten thousand words in twenty-four hours, because I'm not actively drafting a novel. However, I've used it for hours at a time, and the battery didn't decrease too much.

It would be nice if I knew the exact percentage, but it only shows the bar. Either way, I think one of my favorite features is the ability to save to an SD card, but my MacBook does not recognize it when plugged in—could be a skill issue.

Anyway, back to the device.

One of my favorite features is the outline, full stop. I haven't tried to write a full novel using it like I said, but it's been great for planning my short. One could even split the doc into sections to easily navigate it. This feature alone would've been a game-changer back in college.

In addition to the outline feature, you can view two editable documents side-by-side, and it’s fairly easy to switch back and forth. It also has a dark mode for those who can’t handle a glaring white page.

I don't know if it can send directly to a printer, and quite frankly, I don't care to find out because I can just send the doc anywhere from the app, including my printer. I’m also curious about future accessories and updates, but mainly accessories. I sewed my own bag for this, but I’d love options that I don’t have to make.

Overall, I’ve had this product for less than a month, but I love it and would recommend it to anyone in the market for a digital typewriter.

Disclaimer: this was a gifted device!
